It is the Winter of 1967-68 and the City of New Orleans is operating under a siege mentality caused by the sudden appearance of a Predator dubbed the " French Quarter Vampire." The news media is in a frenzy as they continue to report the dismal failure of the New Orleans Police Department to catch the killer. In every instance, the victims are drained of their life's blood and the bodies are discarded in the Garden District. The police are stunned by the fact that there are no puncture wounds on the victims and the killer seems to disappear very quickly with no evidence left behind.
Phillip Rigby is now settled into a dismal winter in Chicago filled with nightmares and dark depression. He has been turned down by the Chicago Police Department for reinstatement. Night after night Rigby has a reoccurring nightmare in which he is being pursued in an cemetery during a driving rainstorm.
An old family friend and mentor, Pastor Hubert Berry suggests that Rigby journey to New Orleans and have "Mama" Addie Lereaux interpret his dream. Upon arrival, Rigby becomes involved in the investigation at the invitation of the New Orleans Police Department. As he becomes involved in the investigation Rigby discovers a hidden agenda involving the supernatural and a series of unusual suspects in the Crescent City.
Book 3 of the Philip Rigby Series, nominated for Best Mystery Series of 2012 by the Paranormal Romance Guild.

Phil Rigby is in a very bad state of mind. He has been permanently retired from the Chicago Police Department, and he now finds solace at the bottom of a bottle. In the past eighteen months he was almost shot to death, battled with the KKK and was betrayed by the woman he had fallen in love with. His behavior is suicidal; he doesn't bathe, and hasn't contacted his family in over a month. To add to his misery he is having nightmares that wake him up screaming. Along comes his friend, Pastor Hubert Berry, who insists that Phil sees a psychic and voodoo queen in New Orleans, Mama Addie Lereaux. When all else fails, you do the ridiculous and seek anyone who might have answers to your nightmares, that is exactly what Phil does. This decision leads him once again into dangerous waters.New Orleans is the current home of a serial killer people are calling a vampire, since all the victims' blood has been totally drained. When Phil visits Mama Addie, he is told that he is being hunted by the Spirit of Death. When Addie appears in one of his nightmares to save him he realizes that what seemed impossible can actually be possible. There are spirits.
Once again Phil finds himself involved in a murder case, a case in which he appears to be personally involved. This time Phil finds himself in the middle of a war between the followers of black magic and the followers of white magic. He has not ingratiated himself with the leader of the black magic voodoo sect, Fer De Lance, Alain Levesque or his daughter Nicole. These are not the kind of people one wants to have against them. By simply asking questions, Phil has been the subject of a few near misses. He nearly was killed by two Fer De Lance poisonous snakes, and he is being followed. He has also been the cause of a friend's dog being beheaded. Talk about being in a tight spot.
Now Phil has been given a letter from Mama Addie instructing him on what course he is to follow in order to destroy the dark forces that have been attacking him and the people of New Orleans. He finds himself once again fighting evil, but this time it won't be easy. He seems to be fighting spirits or at least people who firmly believe in them. He is also trying to keep Asmadeus, a fallen ange,l from reappearing on earth. It sounds impossible but there are many things in Heaven and Earth we know nothing about.
Phil is a wonderful character, he is strong willed, stubborn and does not back down from whatever it takes to solve a case and protect the innocent. This is the third book in the Phillip Rigby series, and to really get the feel for the kind of man Phillip is you should read them in order. The ending was one that I never saw coming.
