Great book, that took a surprising twist on the usual mixing of Urban Fantasy and Military cloak and dagger genre, plus a bit of alternate history. I"ll need to re-read it because there is a lot under the surface of this hard to put down well written book. The author is from Singapore and if I had not read the author notes, I would have had no idea. The action is fast paced and it reminded me of Larry Correia's Monster Hunter series that is just a fun read, but with a much more sophisticated, serious world view.No Gods, Only Daemon's a world that took a slightly different turn, and Western Civilization uses magic and deals with beings from other dimensions, while the Middle East took a different route. The world actually hangs together and is logical. I wish the author had explained a bit more on the world building part with some end notes. The title of the book is a bit mis-leading, but you will need to read the book to find out why... The mythology makes sense and is not the usual urban fantasy drek. The attention to detail reminds me of the Laundry Series by Charlie Stross. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a unique and interesting setting in a parallel world where the "war on terror" is fought with not only guns, but magic and summoned djinn. The writing is good and the characters are well done, but what stands out are the action scenes, which are some of the best I have read. The only weak point is the pacing in the middle drags a bit after a furious beginning, but that is a small sin. Lots of good tradecraft, action scenes, and a fascinating setting make this book a winner. I am eagerly awaiting more.
If Tom Clancy had decided to give one of his adrenaline-fueled thrillers an urban fantasy twist, No Gods Only Daimons by Kai Wai Cheah, would be exactly the kind of novel the master of military adventure would have created.
In this exciting debut novel, Dragon Award nominee Kai Wai Cheah does an excellent job of world-building an alternative Earth that is at once very familiar and utterly exotic. It is a world where the war on terror, the battle between the West and East is fought with more than mere bullets and bombs. There’s also nanotech and Psionics who can manipulate matter and energy. And then there are the Ifreet, powerful Jinn regularly summoned to wreak unholy havoc! Angels and demons, or rather, eudaimons and kakodaimons, are also mixed into the fray via their human agents whom they enhance with various supernatural powers.
For the most part the story is told from the perspective of Luke Landon, a very talented and lethal special ops soldier who joined the war effort after suffering a tragic loss during a terrorist attack. Besides being an agent in an off the books anti-terror outfit for Hesperia (The world’s equivalent of the United States), Luke is also a Covenanter, an agent of a powerful otherworldly being named Hakem al-Dunya. It is a relationship Luke has entered into with many a misgivings, since to covenant with such a being is not only a capital offence in his homeland Hesperia, but it also haunts him with the fear that his zeal to save the world may have cost him his soul!
This is a fun, fast-paced read that should leave you eager to read the sequel.
This book looked badass just from the cover, but I was hesitant because I don’t really do alternate history stories. They’re really not my thing, and trying to keep track of multiple timelines like that is not fun for me.
After finishing this book I can confidently say that I wish all alternate histories handled it this way. It flows extremely well and was a lot of fun to discover how much was the same and how much had changed.
The author’s writing style is fluid and comfortable. I never felt dragged out of the book, nor did I ever feel the need to tell him to hurry things along. He hits the right points at the right time and keeps it interesting throughout.
Action is heavy and intense without seeming contrived or overdone. Characters were pretty cool, although don’t expect intense navel-gazing and crying about childhood disappointments. They’re pretty much what you’d expect from an 80s-90s action movie cast, which is to say they’re human enough to attach to without being bogged down by emotional baggage. Think Die Hard and you’re close.
The bits of humor sprinkled throughout were a nice touch, and had me laughing a few times.
Definitely worth a read. Looking forward to the sequel.
Generally fairly fun and inventive. Reasonably complex storyline that reminds me of some of Tom Clancy's work (especially the mall terrorist sequence). Relies a little too much on government actors to drive the story. A cynical regard for religion and faith kills quite a bit of the fun. Quite a lot of monologuing and pretentious understanding regarding the motives of other characters as a lazy way to get to know them (another Clancy trait). Some strange notions about interrogation being a good source of intelligence (yet another Clancy trait). Some standard leftist nonsense about the necessity of putting women in harms way as spies and letting people guilty of murder disappear into black sites as government assets instead of just killing them (it's a comic book plot device that seems very popular with some people). In the end the Clancy-like submission to government and laws made by other men is disappointing but it isn't a deal-breaker.
