Extended Description

Alex Hollick is a clean-cut robbery division agent in Los Angeles, paying his dues, putting in his time, but his steady climb up the FBI ladder is about to take a major detour. Half of his team is killed in an unauthorized sting operation. The situation worsens when Hollick learns of the internal corruption that helped shape the deadly event.

At the order of his trusted mentor, John Novak, Hollick travels to Virginia, unknowingly as a suspect. A CIA torture team lies in wait, planning to kidnap Hollick and squeeze the truth out of him. After a torturous, drug-induced series of mind games, Hollick is released to Jordan Clay; head of a clandestine group burrowed deep within the FBI. His orders are simple - Bury the truth about the SOCAL robberies…

But things become more complicated from the moment the cover-up begins. Blood spills in all directions as Hollick and Novak attempt to hide the truth. Arson leads to a cop killing in the Mojave Desert. An ambitious Internal Affairs Agent is on to the corruption and two-million dollars in missing robbery money sits in the lap of a beautiful, but troubled young widow.

As the danger escalates, Hollick concocts a seemingly perfect plan to protect the woman of his dreams, Agent Jennifer Fletcher.

Back in Washington, Clay has big plans for Hollick. A career in homicide waits, investigating religious crime at the height of the Satanic Panic of the 1980’s. Feeling confident that his plan has worked, Hollick begins his first case, The Halloween Murders - A double-homicide marked by a satanic signature. Hollick soon realizes that his prime suspect is a scared eyewitness and that the true killers are sabotaging his investigation.

While Hollick struggles to close in on the killers, John Novak has made some plans of his own, to find and destroy the one piece of evidence keeping Jennifer Fletcher alive.

The Bloodbath Ritual The Alex Hollick FBI Series Book 1 edition by Andrew Downs Literature Fiction eBooks

I've now read all the Alex Hollick FBI series. I can't decide if they're really compelling or really awful. Each time I started a new book, I couldn't figure out why I was reading it. The plots were ok but not particularly gripping, The writing was pedantic and slow, overly descriptive about non-essential things and lacking detail about essential plot details. Most of the sex scenes were horribly written and should have been left to the reader's imagination. They added nothing to the book and detracted from the writing. Admittedly by the third or forth one, I started skipping them because they were so painfully awful.
Now having said that, I like the Alex Hollick character. Downs did a good job portraying him as someone who cares about what he does, who wants to be a "good guy" for his country and is torn when he has to participate in activities he's knows are morally reprehensible.

The Bloodbath Ritual The Alex Hollick FBI Series Book 1 edition by Andrew Downs Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Downs builds story upon story, character upon character as he takes you inside America's top enforcement agencies, with unimaginable employees and programs. This time, the "good" guys are the good guys and the bad guys!

The deceit, manipulation, lawlessness burns away at metal-melting temps, even as the central murder case challenges FBI Agent Hollick, who must face his own personal and professional demons.

This one is worthy of a good reading binge.
I am an avid reader and really enjoy a good book. I usually have my pack of authors that I stick to, but came across Bloodbath Ritual and decided to give it a try. I am very glad I did. Mr. Downs can really write. The book pulls you in quick and you start to pull for Alex almost from the beginning. The characters are developed quickly and take on a life of their own. I though that I would lose interest since this book is set in the 1980's but it is so well written that any dated references are easily overlooked due to the deep story.

If you are looking for a thriller that is full of drama then this is your story. I am ready for the next book. I also have a new author to follow.

Enjoy!!
I made it to page 13 before I called it quits. No cop supervisor makes the kind of mistakes this guy did and keeps his job, let alone his position. I had an instant dislike for Hollick because of his really poor decision making.

I did skim a few more pages only to discover that this guy contemplated another totally inappropriate decision. In case someone does choose to read this book, I won't make this a "spoiler" review, but will say there is no way I could read one book, not to mention a whole series. Maybe it's just because of (in my opinion) the really bad start.
I honestly was getting frustrated with this book because I had already read "Origins" which happens to be part of Book 1. After getting into the book it delivered the suspense I was looking for. You need to understand the hero is very flawed and naive but when he uses his powers of deduction he's cooking with gas. I've seen some of the negative reviews, my advice is start with the prequel or Book 1 whichever is free and judge for yourself personally I am going to finish the series 😁
If you read "Origins" first, as I did, then be forewarned that "The Bloodbath Ritual" includes Origins, which ended when Alex received a midnight pizza delivery from Silva notifying Alex of a meeting 20 minutes later when he would receive his first assignment as a member of the Secrets Division. The second half of the book takes Alex (and the reader) to Albuquerque New Mexico, the scene of a double homicide with possible Satanic overtones.

Initially, Origins was disappointing the story opened with Hollick and the other three members of his L.A. FBI robbery team sweating in a hot van in Escondido, California, tension between them high, hoping to thwart some bank robbers who always seemed to be one step ahead. Hollick makes some critical and questionable decisions that result in the death of one robber and the capture of another, but two of his team members perish at the site and the third is in critical condition at the hospital. Almost immediately thereafter, Hollick's boss sends him to Washington DC, where he is met by a crew of agents who abduct him and subject him to torture so extreme and unnecessary I almost stopped reading the book. Almost.

He survived, then began training to join an elite group within the FBI, a group so secretive that very few, outside of the members themselves, even know of its existence.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading how Hollick took complete control of the investigation when he arrived in Albuquerque, making judicious use of the resources available to him. Although he seemed to wrap up the investigation and filed his report, there are still loose ends I hope get resolved in the next book!
The Bloodbath Ritual by Andrew Downs is a doozey!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this solid tale with memorable characters. Downs doesn't have to paint a descriptive paragraph to describe his characters (who cares what cologne someone wears?), and I appreciate that. We get who they are by their actions. All are so relatable, you feel you know them.
Alex Hollick himself is quite an enigma, and with excessive flaws. But you feel for him and get through all the layers as he takes on various missions.
And don't believe for a minute you can figure out this ending. If you do, you're a wiser man than me, so I tip my hat to you.

The only reason this gets 4 stars is due to the slow beginning and a bit of implausibe info regarding the necessary uptake of meds for an addict. No matter how much one gets, their body craves more (Michael Jackson). Some people might have given up, but the writing was good enough to make me keep reading and I'm glad I stuck with it. I'm thinking the author is going to continue some of the stories within the first half of this book, in the next series. I hope so.
